Proin is the only FDA-approved phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride medication for the treatment of canine urinary incontinence due to urethral sphincter hypotonus. Urethral sphincter hypotonus causes canine urinary incontinence as a result of weakened muscles of the urethral sphincter. Proin works by increasing urethral sphincter muscle tone to help prevent urinary accidents.
Availabe in three tablet strengths of half scored, liver-flavored tablets to tailor the dosage for most dogs.
Common clinical signs of urinary incontinence in dogs include:
- Dripping or leaking urine
- Excessive licking of the genital area
- Red and irritated skin around the genital area
- Needing to go more frequently than normal
- Wetting the bed or sleeping area
- Urinating inappropriately in the house
For oral use in dogs only. Not for human use. Keep out of reach of children. If accidentally ingested by humans, contact a physician immediately.
Proin may cause elevated blood pressure and should be used with caution in dogs with pre-existing heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, kidney insufficiency, diabetes, glaucoma, and other conditions associated with high blood pressure.
